Meghan Trainor Talks About Her New Album & Her Next Steps On Let's Be Real

Meghan Trainor Visits The SiriusXM Hollywood Studios In Los Angeles

17-year-old Sammy Jaye is the youngest person to host her own podcast on iHeartRadio, but you wouldn’t know it from her incredible poise and well-researched interviews on Let’s Be Real. Her youth and enthusiasm for her guests facilitates really fun conversations, showing us a side of these celebrities that we’ve never seen before. On this episode, she sits down with pop star Meghan Trainor to hear about her vocal surgery, falling in love with one of the Spy Kids, her new album Treat Myself, her struggles with panic attacks, her upcoming tour with Maroon 5, her dreams for the future, and so much more.

Meghan has been out of the spotlight for a little while due to various medical issues; she had to have a second vocal surgery, forcing her to cancel her tour, and was on strict vocal rest: “You can’t sneeze. You can’t cough. You can’t laugh,” she tells Sammy. “I would tell people, it’s like you’re a dancer and both your legs are broken.” Her worries about her career stalling, and her voice possibly never coming back, was probably why she started experiencing panic attacks, Meghan says. And the answer to anxiety is to express yourself and talk about your feelings, Sammy points out, but Meghan “literally couldn’t talk,” making it so much harder to recover.

Fortunately, she was able to roar back onto the scene with her new album,Treat Myself, and her voice is stronger than ever. “I love your voice because it’s just so versatile,” Sammy tells her, and thanks to several collaborations with great artists like Nicki Minaj and Nashville’s Lennon Stella, her new album has “a little bit of everything” on it. “I wanted any random person to pick it up and like at least one song,” Meghan says. They also talk about Meghan falling in love with Daryl Sabara from Spy Kids, of which both Meghan and Sammy are huge fans. She tells Sammy that she likes to tell people they met when Chloe Moretz set them up on a date in 2006, but they actually met before Meghan was famous, at a party for songwriters Daryl crashed. “My nightmare is to bother a celebrity,” she tells Sammy, “but I was having a good time and I went up to him and said, ‘Hey, Spy Kids?’ and he was like, ‘Yeah.’” She hoped he wouldn’t remember that awkward exchange when they met on their actual date, but he did, “and he loves telling that story,” she laughs.

Hear more about Meghan’s next big goals for her career and her personal life, her love for Dr. Phil, the time Sammy saw Meghan open for 50 Cent, and more on this episode of Let’s Be Real.
