President Donald Trump returned to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner with an hourlong speech filled with jokes, insults and another reference to a possible third term.
The annual dinner was originally held on April 25 but was cut short after an armed man breached security outside the Washington Hilton. The rescheduled event took place July 24 at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., with tighter security and a smaller crowd.
During his speech, Trump took aim at several political rivals, entertainers and journalists. His targets included former President Barack Obama, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and singer Bruce Springsteen.
He also criticized late-night television hosts Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert, calling them “sick people.” CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins was another target of the president’s remarks.
Trump later joked about serving a third presidential term, telling the audience that the second time was better and that a third time would be even better. He then said he was only joking before putting on a red “Trump 2028” hat. The U.S. Constitution limits presidents to being elected to two terms.
The dinner traditionally brings together journalists, politicians and celebrities to recognize White House reporting and celebrate freedom of the press. This year’s event also honored the Secret Service agent and hotel employees who responded during the April security incident.
