John Legend is preparing to portray one of the most influential entertainers and activists in American history.
The EGOT winner has been cast as the late Harry Belafonte in the upcoming biographical drama “The Road Home.” The film is currently in production in South Africa and is being directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon.
The story will examine the musicians and activists connected to Paul Simon’s controversial 1986 album, Graceland, which was recorded during South Africa’s apartheid era. The movie will be told largely through the perspective of South African jazz legend and anti-apartheid activist Hugh Masekela.
Cynthia Erivo will portray singer and activist Miriam Makeba, Thabo Rametsi will play Masekela and Johnny Flynn will appear as Paul Simon.
Belafonte was more than a groundbreaking singer and actor. He was also a committed civil rights activist who supported the movement against apartheid and used his fame to advocate for justice around the world.
Legend said he was honored to portray Belafonte, whom he knew as a friend, mentor and collaborator in the fight for justice.
