Stephanie Mills is facing criticism after publicly discussing concerns about fellow R&B legend Gladys Knight’s health.
During an appearance on The Jason Lee Show, Mills talked about what she says she witnessed while sharing the stage with Gladys during The Queens Tour.
The tour brought together four legendary singers: Gladys Knight, Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan and Patti LaBelle.
Stephanie claimed that Gladys appeared confused at times and described what she witnessed as signs of the “early stages of dementia.”
She also made it clear that despite her concerns, Gladys could still sing.
Stephanie went even further by questioning whether the 82-year-old legend should continue touring and said she believes Gladys deserves the opportunity to “bow out with grace.”
She also criticized Gladys’ husband and manager, William McDowell, for continuing to allow her to perform.
But there is an important distinction: Gladys Knight has not publicly confirmed that she has dementia.
McDowell previously said his wife had not been diagnosed with the condition. Gladys herself has pushed back against earlier claims about her health and has said she is doing well.
She has, however, announced plans to reduce the number of live performances she does as she moves into the next chapter of her life and career.
After receiving backlash for discussing Gladys publicly, Stephanie defended herself and said her comments came from a place of love.
Now fans are debating whether she crossed a line.
Even if Stephanie genuinely believes she is protecting a friend, should someone else publicly discuss another person’s health before that person chooses to share it themselves?
