Ten Historically Black Colleges and Universities are receiving a major federal investment to help expand their STEM research capabilities.
Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock announced that the Department of Defense is awarding $97.1 million to institutions across the country for science, technology, engineering and mathematics research.
The schools receiving funding are Clark Atlanta University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Morgan State University, Jackson State University, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, Texas Southern University and the University of the District of Columbia.
Clark Atlanta University will receive nearly $9.8 million, while several of the other schools will receive approximately $10 million each.
The funding is intended to strengthen research programs and help the institutions increase their ability to compete for major federal research opportunities.
Another goal is helping the schools move toward R1 status, the highest research classification awarded to universities in the United States.
Warnock, a Morehouse College graduate, said HBCUs have long contributed to America’s STEM workforce and deserve greater investment in their research capabilities.
According to his office, since winning his full Senate term in 2022, Warnock has helped secure more than $17 billion for HBCU campuses nationwide, including nearly $275 million for schools in Georgia.
That is a serious investment in the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators.
