Virginia Sen. Louise Lucas Indicted in Federal Cannabis Case

One of Virginia’s most powerful state lawmakers is facing serious federal charges.

Democratic state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, 82, has been indicted along with six other people in a federal criminal case involving an alleged marijuana distribution enterprise.

The eight-count indictment includes allegations involving racketeering, marijuana distribution, money laundering, honest-services fraud through bribery and other offenses.

Lucas herself faces multiple charges.

Federal prosecutors allege Lucas helped lead a family-connected enterprise that acquired and distributed 100 kilograms or more of marijuana and laundered proceeds from the operation.

Her two daughters and a grandson are among the other defendants named in the case.

Federal authorities estimate the alleged five-year operation was worth approximately $4.5 million.

Prosecutors also accuse Lucas of using her position in the Virginia Senate to protect the business and influence matters that could financially benefit the enterprise.

Lucas has served in the Virginia Senate since 1992 and is president pro tempore. She has also served as chair of the powerful Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee.

She has pushed back against the allegations and indicated that she intends to fight the charges.

It is important to remember that an indictment contains allegations. Lucas and the other defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
