BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Fire Department honored fallen firefighters Michael Kennedy and Lieutenant Ed Walsh on Tuesday, five years after the two men were killed battling a Back Bay blaze.
"We honor and remember the lives of Lt. Ed Walsh and FF. Michael Kennedy, who were tragically killed in the line of duty five years ago today, working at a 9 alarm fire at 298 Beacon St.," the department wrote on Twitter. "Please pause and think about our fallen brothers and their families. May they Rest In Peace."
Boston Mayor Marty Walsh also shared his condolences. "It’s been five years since we lost Lt. Edward Walsh and firefighter Michael Kennedy in the 9 alarm fire on Beacon St. There isn’t a day that I don’t remember the ultimate sacrifice that our heroes made to ensure safety for others," Mayor Walsh wrote on Twitter. "My thoughts are with their family and friends."
Fire Commissioner Joe Finn joined WBZ NewsRadio this morning to remember the fallen. "That day was an unusual day," the commissioner recounted, explaining how wind coming off the Charles River accelerated the fatal fire. "We've done a significant amount of training around wind driven fires and how best to address them and how best to recognize when we have those situations," Finn said.
"Today's a solemn day for all of us," the commissioner added. "Especially the families."
