The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly agreed to trade quarterback Geno Smith to the New York Jets, his original NFL team, as part of a deal that also includes a pick swap, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo on Tuesday (March 10).
"Trade! The Raiders are sending two-time Pro Bowl QB Geno Smith to the Jets, sources tell The Insiders. Las Vegas is widely expected to draft Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 pick, clearing the way for Smith to be dealt again at age 35," Pelissero wrote on his X account. "The Raiders are paying the bulk of Geno Smith's salary to facilitate the trade, per source. The Jets get Smith for a little over the league minimum."
Smith, 35, was selected by the Jets at No. 39 overall in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft and went 12-18 in 30 starts during his first four seasons before brief stints with the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers. The former West Virginia standout had a career renaissance with the Seattle Seahawks, going 28-24 in 52 starts during five seasons, which included winning the 2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award and being selected to the Pro Bowl twice, before being traded to the Raiders last offseason.
Smith threw for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions on 302 of 448 passing, while going 2-13 in 15 starts, for Las Vegas in 2025.
