Usher is sparking up intense discussions among fans and critics alike after he declined to say anything negative about Sean "Diddy" Combs while the disgraced artist sits in prison.

The Grammy award-winning singer touched on Combs' influence during a recent conversation with Jabari Young as part of ForbesBLK's new series "The Enterprise Zone." When the mogul's name is mentioned around the 23-minute mark, Usher said he associates Combs' name with "legacy." He continued by explaining that he's able to acknowledge the contributions Combs made to the culture without ignoring the reality of his controversial history.

“I think certain people are prosecuted and maybe not recognized for the greatness that they offer,” Usher explained. “I don’t have anything negative to say about Sean Combs. My experience was not what the world has seen and how he’s been, you know, misrepresented.”

Combs was accused of sexual assault and domestic violence by various alleged victims, including his former girlfriend Casandra "Cassie" Ventura, before he was charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and violations of the Mann Act in 2024. He was ultimately convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and sentenced to 50 months in prison. Usher doesn't defend Combs' actions or say anything about the artist's freedom, which Combs is actively fighting for at the moment. He only speaks to the strides Combs made for Black creatives and entrepreneurs during his tenure in the entertainment industry.

“I’m not saying that every man is perfect,” Usher said. “I’m not saying that all of us don’t have flaws, but I can’t with any sense of humanity not recognize the valuable contributions that this man made for us as Black entrepreneurs, for us as people who transition culture and ideas into something that’s tangible. SO many people benefited from what he created. And I acknowledge that. That’s why I see him as legacy.”

Usher has known and worked with Combs throughout his life. He met the Bad Boy Records founder when he was a teenager and even lived with him at 14. Combs served as the executive producer of Usher's debut album in 1994.
