Quarterback Taylor Heinicke announced his retirement from the NFL at age 33, capping a career that defied the odds and won him fans in Washington and beyond. Heinicke shared the news on Instagram on Wednesday (May 7), thanking those who supported him during his seven-year NFL run.

Heinicke’s journey began as an undrafted free agent out of Old Dominion, where he won the Walter Payton Award as the best offensive player in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in 2012. Despite not being selected in the NFL Draft, he signed with the Houston Texans in 2017 and went on to spend time with seven franchises, appearing in games for five of them, including the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons, Los Angeles Chargers, and most notably, the Washington Commanders. As reported by NFL.com, Heinicke played 42 games, starting 29, and finished with 6,663 passing yards, 39 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.

Heinicke’s most memorable moments came in Washington, where he compiled a 12-11-1 record as a starter over three seasons, including five fourth-quarter comebacks. His unexpected rise reached a peak during the 2020 playoffs, when he started a wild-card game against the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. According to USA TODAY, Heinicke threw for 306 yards, passed for one touchdown, and rushed for another in a spirited effort, earning widespread praise even in defeat.

After his run with Washington, Heinicke signed with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023, making five appearances, then was traded to the Los Angeles Chargers. He played four games in Los Angeles before being released ahead of the 2025 season, as reported by Hogs Haven. Heinicke spent the 2025 season out of football before announcing his retirement.

Reflecting on his career, Heinicke wrote, “For 25 years, I had the pleasure to play this great sport of football... Many ups and downs throughout the years, but the ups outweigh the downs tenfold. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would've been able to live this life. Thank you to all who have supported me in this journey.”

With Heinicke stepping away, the NFL loses a player remembered for grit, determination, and unexpected heroics. There are currently no announced plans for his post-playing career.
