Inter Miami CF's captain, Lionel Messi, left the field during a match against Philadelphia Union on Sunday (May 24) due to physical discomfort. After medical evaluations on Monday, the initial diagnosis revealed muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. The timeline for his return depends on his clinical and functional progress.

Messi, who asked to be substituted in the 73rd minute after experiencing discomfort, was replaced by Mateo Silvetti. Despite his exit, Inter Miami managed to secure a 6-4 victory, entering the Major League Soccer break in second place in the Eastern Conference.

The injury comes as Argentina, the defending World Cup champions, prepares for the upcoming tournament. Argentina's first match is scheduled for June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City, Missouri. Messi, who led Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup, is expected to play a crucial role in the team's defense of their title.

Inter Miami's coach, Guillermo Hoyos, noted the heavy field conditions and Messi's fatigue as reasons for his substitution, emphasizing the importance of not taking risks. Messi's return will be closely monitored, with no definitive timetable set.

Argentina's squad for the World Cup is expected to be announced next week, with pre-tournament friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9. Messi's participation will depend on his recovery progress.

The World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19 across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. You can listen to Fox's coverage of all 104 FIFA World Cup 2026 games LIVE and for FREE via iHeartRadio’s digital app and more than 100 broadcast stations nationwide!
