Kanye West, now known as Ye, faces renewed backlash as San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones calls for the cancellation of his upcoming concert at the Alamodome on the Fourth of July. The mayor expressed her concerns over hosting someone with a history of antisemitic remarks in a city-funded venue, especially on the nation's 250th birthday.
Mayor Jones took to social media to voice her opposition, stating,
"Military City USA should not host someone with a record of hate speech and antisemitic comments in a city-funded facility like our Alamodome—not ever, and certainly not on July 4th." Her statement aligns with similar sentiments from other officials and venues around the world, where Ye's concerts have faced cancellations due to his controversial comments.
Recently, Ye was barred from entering the United Kingdom, leading to the cancellation of his performance at the Wireless Festival. Deadline reported that similar cancellations occurred in Poland and France, where local officials took a stand against his performances. Despite these setbacks, tickets for Ye's San Antonio show remain available on Ticketmaster, ranging from $127.50 to over $1,460.
The controversy surrounding Ye stems from his past antisemitic remarks and actions, including selling swastika T-shirts and releasing a song titled "Heil Hitler." Although Ye has issued apologies, including a public one in The Wall Street Journal, the backlash continues.
As Ye prepares for his concert in San Antonio, Mayor Jones and other opponents plan to urge leaders to cancel the event. The Alamodome has yet to comment on the situation.
