The Columbus Blue Jackets will start training camp next month without one of their key goaltenders, Elvis Merzlikins. The 32-year-old netminder is out indefinitely following shoulder surgery, as announced by the team's general manager, Don Waddell. Merzlikins sustained the injury during offseason workouts, and after an MRI, surgery was deemed necessary. He will be reevaluated in a few weeks to determine his return timeline.

Merzlikins, who has played 274 games with the Blue Jackets, has a record of 108-111-38, with a 3.22 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. He was expected to serve as the backup to Jet Greaves during the upcoming season. Greaves, who recently signed a three-year contract extension, emerged as the team's top goaltender last season.

The timing of Merzlikins' surgery adds to the Blue Jackets' offseason challenges. The team is also negotiating a contract with young star Adam Fantilli, whose potential salary could push them over the NHL's salary cap. Placing Merzlikins on long-term injured reserve could provide the necessary cap relief.

In response to Merzlikins' absence, the Blue Jackets signed Pheonix Copley to a one-year contract. Copley, a veteran goalie, is expected to compete for the backup role during training camp. The Blue Jackets may also consider signing another experienced goalie to ensure depth in their roster.

Columbus is set to open training camp on Wednesday, September 16, with the first preseason game against the Detroit Red Wings scheduled for Monday, September 21. The regular season will begin on Thursday, October 1, against the Buffalo Sabres.
