Dictionary maker Merriam-Webster has identified its Word of the Year for 2022: āgaslightingā. The publisher says lookups for the word āgaslightingā on its website increased by 1,740% in 2022. The dictionary defines gaslighting as "the psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time, that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, the uncertainty of oneās emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator." An example of gaslighting is when a cheater says, āIām not cheating, youāre just paranoidā, as a way to deflect blame.
