Cruise Passengers Monitored After Rare Virus Outbreak

Seventeen Americans are back in the United States after a cruise ship was linked to a rare hantavirus outbreak.

The passengers were transported to the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where they are being monitored as a precaution.

Health officials say one passenger tested mildly positive for the Andes virus, a rare strain that can spread through close human contact. Two additional passengers were flown back in special biocontainment units.

According to reports, the outbreak has already been linked to three deaths and several illnesses connected to the cruise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the risk to the general public remains very low.

Hantaviruses are typically spread through contact with infected rodents, including exposure to saliva, urine, or droppings.

While cases remain rare, the story is drawing attention because of memories many people still have from past global health scares and quarantines.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely while reassuring the public that there is no widespread threat at this time.
