More than a decade after selecting Chicago as its home, the Obama Presidential Center is officially opening its doors on Juneteenth.
The center honors the legacy of former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama while creating new opportunities for the surrounding community.
Located on Chicago's South Side, the campus features a presidential museum filled with campaign memorabilia, historical exhibits, and artifacts from the Obama administration. Visitors will also find a public library, playground, community gathering spaces, and a basketball court.
Supporters of the project say the center is designed to be more than a museum. It is expected to attract tourism, create jobs, support local businesses, and encourage new investment throughout nearby neighborhoods.
The opening coincides with Juneteenth, adding additional significance to the launch of a project years in the making.
