The family of 18-year-old Nolan Wells received a powerful show of support during Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated’s 85th Grand Conclave in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Nolan’s parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley, appeared alongside civil rights attorney Ben Crump during the fraternity’s Community Day rally at Fountain Square on July 31. The family addressed the ongoing fight for answers surrounding Nolan’s death after a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi.
According to the Greeks Informed Instagram page, members of Omega Psi Phi embraced the Wonsley family and assured them they would not have to continue their fight alone.
Nolan traveled to Horn Island with three white friends on July 4. His body was recovered two days later. His family has questioned the initial handling of the case and pursued an independent autopsy, which was unable to rule out foul play because the pathologist said additional information was needed.
The Jackson County district attorney has since announced that Nolan’s death will be presented to a Mississippi grand jury. The proceedings will be confidential, and no criminal wrongdoing has been established.
The Wonsley family and its supporters continue to call for a thorough and transparent investigation into what happened to Nolan.
