The hashtag #EmmysSoWhite is trending again following the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.
No actors of color won the major lead or supporting acting categories presented during Monday night’s ceremony, renewing criticism about representation at television’s biggest awards show.
The conversation may sound familiar.
Back in 2021, #EmmysSoWhite went viral after white performers won all 12 major acting categories despite a diverse group of nominees.
This year, several prominent Black performers were nominated, including Quinta Brunson, Ayo Edebiri, Zendaya and Sterling K. Brown, but none took home an acting award during the main ceremony.
There were Black winners elsewhere during Emmy weekend.
Octavia Spencer won her first Emmy for Outstanding Narrator for Lost Women of Alaska: The Missing. Her category was presented during the Creative Arts Emmys and was not part of Monday night’s televised ceremony.
And congratulations are still in order for Uncle Steve.
Steve Harvey was nominated for Outstanding Host for a Game Show for Celebrity Family Feud. Jimmy Kimmel ultimately won the category for hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. That award was also presented during the Creative Arts Emmys.
The latest results have once again sparked conversations about who gets nominated, who wins and whether television award shows have made enough progress when it comes to representation.
