Toys “R” Us kids, this one is for you.
The iconic toy retailer is making a major comeback just in time for the holiday shopping season.
Toys “R” Us announced plans to open 120 new standalone stores across the United States this holiday season, bringing the company’s total to about 160 standalone locations by Christmas.
The company already operates smaller Toys “R” Us shops inside Macy’s locations nationwide and is also expanding into airports and other retail spaces.
Some of the new standalone stores will include cafés, candy shops and special Creator Studios where toy brands, influencers and content creators can host events and introduce new products.
But there is another interesting reason behind the comeback: Adults are buying a whole lot of toys.
Collectors, teenagers and nostalgic adults are becoming a major force in the toy business. Everything from LEGO sets and action figures to Pokémon cards, Barbie collectibles and other fan merchandise has helped expand the market beyond young children.
Toys “R” Us famously filed for bankruptcy in 2017 and closed its remaining U.S. stores the following year.
Now the giraffe is trying to make another comeback.
And for everyone who grew up walking those massive Toys “R” Us aisles while singing, “I don’t wanna grow up,” apparently you do not have to.
